I am all for mastery... and have been for the 17 years I've been teaching, but there should be no "automatic" retakes. If a student doesn't do the work Isleeps/refuses to do the work)then they should get a zero. In Rock Hill we are speaking of separating the grade into an "academic grade" and a "citizenship grade". If a kid sleeps or refuses to do work they will receive a 40 or a 50 and a bad citizenship grade/comment. This will not fix the problem. Do we really think that this will help the students that are failing now? These students/parents already are not concerned with grades. I don't believe they will really be concerned with a "citizenship grade". Once again... we will "raise the bottom" up instead of holding the students to a higher standard. To add to all of this... the new policy that is being drafted is "not" supported by the vast majority of teachers. If there is not "buy-in" from the "troops" then I believe this policy will ultimately fail. This policy is being "rammed" down our throats because "everyone else" is doing it. Can't we have our own standards? Why do we always have to follow the trends/crowd?Joehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04886520028090165734noreply@blogger.com
