South :Pointe's Spin Magazine does it Again! #rockhill #rhsd3

South Pointe in the News (SPiN), student media of the Stallions, made history yesterday in Columbia at the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association Spring Conference and Awards when both its print and online versions of the newspaper earned the top ratings given by judges in their separate categories.  Very few other state schools have both print and online versions and no other school earned top honors in both print and online competition. The awards were given in the Ballroom at Russell House on the University of South Carolina campus.

SPiN earned the coveted All-State ranking in the print category and was declared Excellence in Scholastic Newspaper Awards (ESNA) Sweepstakes champion for Class A (schools with 1,500 or fewer students). Wando High School’s Tribal Tribune took first place in the Sweepstakes for schools with more than 1,500.  The Sweepstakes champions collected the most first, second, and third place Excellence in Scholastic Newspaper Awards in individual competition in 13 categories such as Sports and Front Page Design.

Stallions who won the ESNA Yearly First-Place Awards were senior Maggie Hedrick in both Art and Computer Design, senior managing editor O’Brien Brown in Computer Design, senior editor-in-chief Wade Hopper in Front Page Design, and senior Loftin Bridges in Sports.

Earning second-place ESNA Yearly Awards in the state competition were Brown in Photography, junior Cole Davenport in Reviews, senior Luke Allen in Sports, Hopper in Layout, senior contributor Justin Syhabanditha in Columns,  and senior Jonathan Shoaf in Features.

In the online newspaper competition, which is only in its second year of existence through the SCSPA, SPiN Wired earned the top ranking of Superior.  Editor-in-chief Holden LeCroy, a junior, also earned first-place honors in Online Photography and second in Online News Features. Junior Aziyah Ford placed second in Online Opinion Pieces. LeCroy and junior Tanner Norby also won third place in Online Sports.

Additionally, seniors Jake Riggins and Graceyn Taylor earned Spring ESNAS, Taylor for second place in News Feature and Riggins for third place in Features.

To have both our print and online versions, which publish completely different content, bring home top ratings in the state competition and to see so many Stallions earning individual honors at the highest level of very tough competition means our journalism program has set itself apart from all other programs in the state because we are the only place doing both print and online at this level of excellence as recognized by the state scholastic press association.

Leap Into Literacy in #Rockhill

Please join us as we “Leap into Literacy” and kick-off the Week of the Young Child, Monday, April 7th at 10:30 am at the Rock Hill Old Town Amphitheater.  Our second event during Come See Me Week, “Come See our Pad”,  will be Friday, April 11^th beginning at 10:00 am at the Resource Center.  

The Week of the Young Child™ in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is held each year to celebrate young children and their families and to thank all those who make a difference in the life of a child. ParentSmart, in partnership with York County First Steps and the Early Learning Partnership of YC invite parents with preschool children to join us as we “Leap into Literacy”. Representative Ralph Norman will share a proclamation provided by Mayor Echols followed by some fun, interactive, educational activities led by the Reading Giraffe and Rock Hill Schools Title I, Parent Teacher Specialists. All children will receive a free book compliments of Dr. Winslow and the “Cheer for Children” library.

Northwestern High School Jazz Bands Rate Superior #rockhill

The Northwestern High School Bands have completed the state 2014 Large Ensemble Music Assessments and earned the highest possible rating of superior in every performance.  The events included performances by the Senior Jazz Ensemble, the 9^th Grade Band, the Concert Band, and the Symphonic Band.  

The ensembles were evaluated by 5 different adjudicators who evaluated the ensembles’ performances on three prepared selections as well as the students’ sight-reading ability.  In addition, senior, french hornist Kyle Thompson was recognized at the SCBDA All-State Band Concert as the winner of the Phi Beta Mu Music Scholarship Audition.  Phi Beta Mu is a national music fraternity. The scholarship was established to recognize high school music accomplishment of the highest level and to encourage outstanding instrumentalists to study music beyond high school.  Members of Phi Beta Mu from across the state nominated students to audition for the scholarship and the students auditioned for members of the Furman University School of Music faculty.  

Kyle plans to study music at either the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore or Northwestern University in Chicago.

Rock Hill Schools Superintendent Finalists:

Dr. Richard J. O'Malley

Dr. Richard J. O’Malley currently serves as Superintendent of Schools for Edison Public Schools in Edison, NJ, where he has served since 2011.  Edison Public Schools is the fifth largest school district in New Jersey. He began his career in teaching and prior to his current appointment served as Superintendent for Matawan‑Aberdeen Regional School District in Aberdeen, NJ. Dr. O’Malley received his Ed.D. from Seton Hall University and an Master of Education from Monmouth University.

Dr. Kelly U. Pew

Dr. Kelly U. Pew currently serves as Superintendent for The School District of Pickens County where she has served since 2008.  She began there as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Instructional Services and was promoted to the role of Superintendent in 2012.  She began her career in teaching and prior to Pickens County, served as a school principal in Oconee County.  Dr. Pew holds a Doctorate of Philosophy, Educational Leadership from Clemson University and a Master of Education from Furman University.

Dr. Thomas G. Schmolze

Dr. Thomas G. Schmolze currently serves as Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Student Services for the Fort Mill School District. In addition to previous positions in Fort Mill, he has also served as a teacher and high school principal in the Clover School District. Dr. Schmolze’s degrees include a Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University and a Master of Education from Winthrop University. He  began his teaching career in the Rock Hill School District.

A news conference will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 14, in the Board Conference Room in the district office (660 N. Anderson Road in Rock Hill). An announcement will be made regarding the finalists for the superintendent's position in Rock Hill Schools.

The administration of Rock Hill Schools is pleased to announce that Rhonda Hudak, the District's Teacher of the Year, has just been named a finalist for the state honor. She will soon be visited by a crew from the South Carolina Dept. of Education and will later participate in an interview with the State TY Selection Committee. The announcement of the S. C. Teacher of the Year will be announced on April 23 at a banquet in Columbia.

The five finalists listed alphabetically by last name are:

• Jennifer Ainsworth, a high school moderate special needs teacher at Socastee High School, Horry County School District.

• John “Jed” Dearybury, a 2nd grade teacher at Woodland Heights Elementary School, Spartanburg School District 6.

• Rhonda Hudak, a 7th grade English Language Arts teacher at Rawlinson Road Middle School, Rock Hill School District 3.

• Patrick Kelly, a 12th grade Advanced Placement U.S. government and politics teacher at Blythewood High School, Richland School District 2.

• Vivian “Beth” Tuten, a high school special education teacher at Swansea High School, Lexington School District 4.
