Rock Hill School News For December 6, 2011

Holiday Concerts
Tuesday, Dec. 13 - Dutchman Creek Middle School Choral Department  at 7:30 p.m.  
Directed by Jeri McGuffin, the "free" concert will include selections from the Medieval period through the Baroque, as well as spirituals, a Hebrew piece, and pop standards. Live accompaniment includes a rhythm section, violin, and saxophone. In addition, several numbers will include choreography.
Tuesday, Dec. 13 - Northwestern High School Chamber Orchestra at 7:30 p.m.  
The concert will be directed by Marsha Gross and held in the school auditorium.
Thursday, Dec. 15 - Ebenezer Avenue Elementary School at 7:00 p.m.  
Third-graders, directed by Kathy Herlong, will present "Christmas at the O.K. Corral" in the school cafeteria.
Thursday, Dec. 15 - Rock Hill High School Choral Department at 7:30 p.m.  
Directed by Jonathan Hall, the concert will be held in the school auditorium. Tickets will be $5 for adults and $3 for students. 

South Pointe Art Show Reception
South Pointe High School, with Ashley Beard, art teacher, as host, will have an Art Show Opening Reception from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the main gallery on Thursday, Dec. 8.  Admission will be free, and sweet treats and punch will be served. After attending the reception, you will want to stay and attend a holiday performance by South Pointe's band, chorus, and orchestra at 7:00 p.m.  

Adult Education Earns State Awards
At the 10th Annual Adult Education’s “Celebrating Our Success” Ceremony on Nov. 18 in Columbia, Rock Hill Schools Adult Education received the following awards and recognition:
Career Readiness Award – For programs issuing the highest number of Career Readiness Certificates (Work Keys) during 2010-2011.
Palmetto Trend Setters—This award is based on the total number of GED’s issued by each program during 2010-2011.
Palmetto Performers—Given to the top 10 counties in the state with the highest number of high school credentials awarded during 2010-2011 based on census count and number of people lacking a credential.                   
Adult Education State Director of the Year, 2010-11 — Congratulations to Sandy Andrews.

An Evening with Barrage
Orchestra directors in Rock Hill Schools will present An Evening with Barrage, a world-famous contemporary string ensemble from Calgary, Canada, at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, in the Sullivan Middle School Auditorium. Since forming in 1996, the group has performed for millions of people around the globe. Tickets are now available and can be purchased through Jan. 16 by phone (704.372-1000), online at www.carolinatix.org or at the box office for Carolinatix (Blumenthal Performing Arts) in downtown Charlotte. As a special part of the concert, the district's own middle and high school orchestra students will be guest performers.
