Northwestern High School graduate and UNC Junior Enzo Martinez was named among the top 15 college soccer players in the country on Sunday when it was announced he was a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists. Martinez has tallied nine goals to go along with 10 assists for the Tar Heels.
Martinez led the Tar Heels in points a year ago and has taken on more of a distributor role in 2011 and flourished. Martinez is the first Tar Heel to reach double digits in assists since Matt Crawford in 2002 as the Rock Hill, S.C., native has contributed on 10 goals this season. The scoring touch has been there as well for Martinez who owns nine goals on the season, including a free kick game winner against Coastal Carolina in the second round.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in college soccer. The semifinalists will be trimmed to the final three on Friday, Dec. 9 and the three finalists will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis for a news conference announcing the winner on Jan. 6, 2012.
