Rock Hill School District News For October 3, 2012

ESEA Waiver Flexibility
The S.C. Dept. of Education will hold a statewide virtual meeting tonight (http://ed.sc.gov/events/esea/) from 6:00-7:30 for the purpose of providing an update on the implementation of the ESEA ( Elementary and Secondary Education )Flexibility Request. The public will have the opportunity to submit questions during the meeting, and the Department will answer them, time permitting.
Forum for School Board Candidates
A forum for school board candidates will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23, at The Cotton Factory at the corner of Dave Lyle Blvd. and Chatham Avenue near downtown Rock Hill. The following four citizens will vie for the at-large seat now held by Board Chair Bob NorwoodDan BallouWayne WingateTerry Hutchinson, and Tyrie Rowell. The forum is being co-sponsored by the York County Education Assn. and the S.C. School Improvement Council.
Popular Band Festival Slated for October 6
The Old English Festival of Bands will be held this Saturday, October 6, in District Three Stadium. Eleven bands from North and South Carolina will compete. The gates will open at noon, and the first band will perform at 2:00. Although they won't be competing for awards, the host bands, the Rock Hill High Band of Distinction, directed by Joe Gulledge, will perform at 5:00 p.m., and the Northwestern Purple Regiment, directed by Mark Yost, will perform at 9:15 p.m. Tickets will be $8 for adults and $5 for students.
Fundraisers
Boosters of the South Pointe Band of Thunder will host a BBQ sale on Friday, October 12, from 10:30 till the BBQ is gone! Plates will be $8; a pound will be $9; and the tailgate special will be $25. The BBQ will be prepared by the award-winning "Slap Yo Mama BBQ." Orders (including school orders) can be placed by emailing  Amanda Cavin at amandacavin@comporium.net.
The Rock Hill Kiwanis Club will host "Welcome Home" on Saturday, October 13, to raise money for their Terrific Kids program. 

Earthquake Drill
October 14-20 has been proclaimed by S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley as "Earthquake Awareness Week." Schools statewide are to participate in a drill at 10:18 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, along with schools in N.C., Georgia, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
School Board Work Session
The Rock Hill School Board will meet for a work session on Monday, October 8, at The Children's School at Sylvia Circle
