Palmetto Champions Awards winners named Thursday night
The South Carolina Football Coaches Association Thursday night handed out their annual Palmetto Champions Awards to the state’s top specialist, back, lineman and coach.
The Specialist Player of the Year is P/K Alex Howell of West Florence. This season he was 29-29 on extra points, 8-12 on field goals with a long of 51 yards and he averaged over 41 yards per punt. He has committed to Boston College.
The Back of the Year is Northwestern QB Justin Worley. This season he passed voer 4439 yards and 52 touchdowns. He’s passed for over 12,500 yards in his career. Worley has committed to Tennessee.
The Lineman of the Year is DE Jadeveon Clowney of South Point. This season Clowney has 128 tackles with 18 tackles for loss, 19.5 sacks, 33 quarterback hurries and has caushed 10 fumbles.
And the Coach of the Year is Dave Gutshall of Dorman. He’s led the Cavaliers to a 14-0 record and a spot in the 4A-D1 state championship game.
- Bobby Carroll of South Pointe has gotten his team back into the title game to be played Saturday. Carroll has the fortune of coaching one of the top football players in the county in Jadaveon Clowney.
