District Congratulates Award Winners
...The Rock Hill High Band of Distinction, directed by Joe Gulledge, was awarded third place and the bronze medal at the 5A Marching Band Championship last weekend at S. C. State Unviersity in Orangeburg.
...The South Pointe Band of Thunder, under the baton of James Turner, recently finished first in Class 2A and won the Grand Champion award for 1A at the BandBeat competition in Charlotte. In addition to other top awards at BandBeat, the band also placed sixth in state 3A marching competition.
...Jimmy Wallace, Northwestern's well-known varsity football coach, has been named AAAA Coach of the Year by the S.C. Athletic Coaches' Assn., and this is not the first time he's received this outstanding honor!
...Northwestern's varsity cheerleaders, sponsored by Koren Pantsari, have advanced to the state finals following their fourth-place win in the upperstate championship.
...Three district business partners and one civic organization will be recognized on Nov. 14 by the State Board of Education for exceptional volunteerism. The annual awards are designed to honor the time, energy, talents and other resources contributed to our state's public schools. Congratulations to Best Buy, the City of Rock Hill, Pak's Martial Arts Fitness Center, and the South Pointe After Prom Committee.
...The Sullivan and Rawlinson Road bands will combine forces tonight (Nov. 8) at 7:30 in the Rawlinson Road Aud. to pay tribute to those who have served or are serving in our military. The bands will also accept any "gently used clothes" at tonight's concert to donate to a local Veteran's group.
...Oakdale's kindergarten students will perform Nov. 9 at the Bigger House in Glencairn Garden at 10:00 a.m. as part of their "Honoring Hometown Heroes" project and in conjunction with a Parks/Recreation/Tourism tribute.
...Northside will pay tribute to our veterans, past and current, on Nov. 9 at 8:10 a.m. and again at 9:10 a.m.
<Oakale Elementary will have a "Disability Awareness Day" on Nov. 13. Students will participate in a number of activities, including being in a wheelchair or wearing socks on their hands to diminish fine motor skills.
<The public can now review textbooks and instructional materials that have been proposed for use in S. C.'s public schools. The Instructional Tech Center in the Richard W. Riley College of Ed. at Winthrop is one of the viewing sites. A recommendation for adoption will be made to the State Board of Education on Dec. 12.
<David Harrison, a renown children's book author, will visit with Lesslie's students on Nov. 12. Mr. Harrison will also work with teachers at the end of the school day.
<Castle Heights will have an indoor yard sale in the school gym/gallery area on Nov. 17 from 7:00-11:00 a.m. They will have vendors and food.
<The Northwestern Theater Company will present Disney's High School Musical Nov. 14-17 in the school auditorium.
<This month's "In Our Schools" SCETV series will feature two public schools that provide choices for students and parents through successful Montessori and single-gender programs. The show will air at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11.
