Congratulations to . . .
  • Sullivan Middle School on being featured in the September edition of “Insight,” a newsletter of the S.C. Assn. of School Administrators, for its school-wide project on the importance of peace and its culminating event where 900 students formed a human peace sign.
  • Saluda Trail Middle School on its selection as one of 35 pilot schools statewide to participate in TransformSC, an education initiative of New Carolina comprised of business leaders, policy-makers, educators, parents and students. The goal is to produce graduates ready to compete in a global economy. 

Optimist Club for Educators
An organizational meeting of an Optimist Club for Educators will be held at 4 pm Thurs., Oct. 3, in Room G-134 at Independence Elementary. The purpose of the club is to better serve children. 

Bits & Pieces
  • Enrollment is up! The 15-day report shows 17,663 students as compared with 17,384 in 2010. Ebinport, Richmond Drive and India Hook elementary schools are close to capacity!
  • Rock Hill Schools will celebrate 125 years of public education in the Rock Hill community on Weds., Nov. 20, during American Ed Week. All schools and offices will be involved.

School Fundraisers
  • Northwestern – The Girls’ Basketball Program, coached by John Bramlett, will sell smoked chicken and pulled pork BBQ sandwiches from the “Kickin’ Pig” tomorrow, Sept. 26, in F Gym. Plates will be $8. 
  • Rock Hill High – The Theatre Dept., directed by Stephanie Daniels, needs money for its upcoming production of “The Little Mermaid.” Employees can help by attending “Spirit Night” at Orange Leaf (335 Herlong) on Oct. 1 from 4-10 pm and purchasing frozen yogurt. The thespian group will receive 10 percent of all proceeds.
  • Rock Hill High – The National Beta Club, sponsored by Melissa Tucker, is selling “Bearcats Lend a Hand” charity t-shirts for $10/short-sleeved and $15/long-sleeved through Oct. 18, the proceeds of which will benefit Pilgrim’s Inn, the Salvation Army’s “Angel Tree,” and the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. The Club is also selling business sponsorships for the back of the shirt. To order shirts, email mtucker@rhmail.org.
  • South Pointe – The Band of Thunder, directed by James Turner, will sell BBQ from “Slap Yo Mama BBQ” on Oct. 4 from 10:30 ‘till it’s gone. Plates are $8; a pound is $9; and the tailgate special is $25.
